SCAW Survival

Although the palisade fence was in ill repair and many gaps afforded easy access the entrance to go up on the dump, was on the edge of the motorway off-ramp. In the late afternoon the mountainous dump look medieval. The path leading straight up at first, then splitting off in angles to make the going-up easier. At the top figures, are etched against the cloudy sky. Some sitting on heaps of collected scraps. Pieces of metal rods bent and run-of from the furnaces at the SCAW metals factory.
They watch the truck as it struggles up the terraced dump and get ready to be first when it tip its, still smoaldering load. The heavier pieces of slag is lugged over the edge and then moved towards the entrance.
